Every year whenever June rolls around, we always expect the sun to show up, and every year we forget how overcast and chilly June can really be much of the time. Thus the term "Junuary."

Not far from this ridge on the early evening of Sept. 29, 1949 a C-82 "flying boxcar" from McChord Air Force base crashed near where the three counties share a point on the border killing all three crewman. For decades the burned out fuselage remained in the woods and the spot became known as "airplane crash" to locals, especially loggers and hunters.

The freeway mileage sign outside of McCleary on westbound SR 8 made famous in a photo by Kurt Cobain and a pal where Kurt covered up the numerals 1 and 2, leaving a "666" message. June 8, 2013
