Creature comforts

Nov. 18, 2018

A carpet of fallen black walnuts in McCleary equal free eats for a wide variety of wild critters in the cold months ahead.

If it happens in the woods, it can happen in McCleary city limits

Sept. 20, 2018

A forensic look at this brings me to the conclusion that a large bird of prey probably took off with one the squirrels in my yard, or possibly one of the wild rabbits. I've seen owls, eagles, hawks, and falcons fly through here over the years.

There have been coyote and cougar sightings reported from residential neighborhoods in the last few months. A few years ago I saw a huge porcupine sauntering down a city street.

One animal I used to see a lot around here but not much anymore-- the possum.

Let's not get started on raccoons.

Can you spot the rabbit on Rabbit Hill?

July 28, 2016. Since this photo was taken last month the area has been bulldozed and many trees have been cut.

What happened to the rabbits?

Aug. 26, 2016. Part of Rabbit Hill is being shaved, probably for more new houses. I didn't see any rabbits up there this morning.

Misty morning First Street

Photo taken this morning on my walk, 6:02 AM. Lots of rabbits running around the road at that time of morning. Other times I've enountered raccoons and deer on that stretch of First between Beck and Mommsen.

The Rabbit of Legend

Aug. 14, 2016. There is a rabbit I have seen more than once near the top of Rabbit Hill that is enormous. About sunrise this morning it politely posed for me at Evergreen Place as I walked by.

There are rabbits all over town these days, more than I ever seen in the past, but this one is the Godzilla of the bunch. I have to wonder whatever happened to all those coyotes we used to hear and occasionally see?

The view from Rabbit Hill

At least that is what I call the area of Cedar Street and Evergreen Place due to the fact rabbits outnumber people up there 500 to one. This is a view of McCleary looking northwest, where the Olympic Mountains taper off into hills. Mason County is in the distance. June 25, 2016

The bend in First St.

Not unusual to see rabbits or deer roaming around this part of the road. Apr. 18, 2012
