1940s architecture
Oct. 27, 2017
The building we know as Gordon's Select Market was built, I think, during or shortly after WWII. The decorative tower-like structure on the storefront has a trace of Art Deco that has always appealed to me. When I was a child the main entrance to the grocery store faced Simpson Avenue. I'm glad the current owners have maintained that tower feature as a McCleary icon.

I am not a football fan but enjoy how the Seattle Seahawks bring people together and create a sense of regional pride. Gordon's has been consistent in celebrating the Seahawks spirit in their decor during football season for the past several years.

Political grafitti
Oct. 8, 2017
Although they seldom stay up for long, there has been a tradition of citizens voicing their opinions on civic issues via the Post Office bulletin board. In the example above, a notice from the City regarding a public hearing for a conditional use permit for a residential treatment facility has gained comments from two different sources:
"Why in the middle of the day? when people are at work!"
"Someone getting paid for this to go through!!! 'Truth'"

Golden Rule Store
Aug. 6, 2017
This vacant lot on Main Street was once the site of the Golden Rule Store operated by Anthony (1908-1960) and Azizeh (1915-2001) Souda otherwise known as Tony and Z.Z. The wooden structure was still standing until the mid-1960s. The empty building on the left was originally the Timbear Cafe, constructed ca. 1957.

July 23, 2017.
There is something poetic and oddly comforting about these two community facilities being next to each other.
