Happy New Year

Jan. 1, 2018.

The bustling live-wire central business district of downtown McCleary on New Year's morning, 2018.

Hmmm, no one seems to be up and around. Gosh, I wonder why?

Blue Christmas

Christmas morning, 2017. Actually this is a very rare White Christmas in McCleary, but the old flip-phone camera captured it as blue, making me imagine this lonely little snow-covered bear is singing, "I'll have a Blue Christmas without you." Cue in Elvis!

As you can see, Sam's Food Mart is one of the few places still open this morning. It might be my imagination, but it seemed there was more snow in general south of Pine Street where the elevation is a little higher.

1940s architecture

The building we know as Gordon's Select Market was built, I think, during or shortly after WWII. The decorative tower-like structure on the storefront has a trace of Art Deco that has always appealed to me. When I was a child the main entrance to the grocery store faced Simpson Avenue. I'm glad the current owners have maintained that tower feature as a McCleary icon.

I am not a football fan but enjoy how the Seattle Seahawks bring people together and create a sense of regional pride. Gordon's has been consistent in celebrating the Seahawks spirit in their decor during football season for the past several years.

Political grafitti

Although they seldom stay up for long, there has been a tradition of citizens voicing their opinions on civic issues via the Post Office bulletin board. In the example above, a notice from the City regarding a public hearing for a conditional use permit for a residential treatment facility has gained comments from two different sources:

"Why in the middle of the day? when people are at work!"

"Someone getting paid for this to go through!!! 'Truth'"

Someone please call the Museum of Misplaced Quotation Marks!

This issue of The East County News includes an ad from Value Ford in Elma with the promise:

"Buy a new or used vehicle for $4000 or more and receive a new tactical or hunting shotgun, AR styled rifle, or pistol (Mossberg, Colt, or Ruger)."
